Most people have heard the terms “anxiety” and “stress” used interchangeably, but these are two different things. Both can take a heavy toll on the body and they can share some of the same physical and emotional symptoms. To break it down further, stress is your body’s response to a threatening situation (perceived or otherwise) and anxiety is your reaction to that stress. While CBD can help both, today we are focusing on the specific effect CBD can have on stress.
CBD May Help With Stress
To review previous articles published here, Cannabidiol (CBD) is the most abundant cannabinoid in cannabis (Cannabis sativa) after tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD has multiple health benefits, such as the alleviation of anxiety, depression, stress, and even reduction of inflammation and pain. Unlike THC, CBD has no psychoactive effects, meaning that it does not cause any euphoric or mind-altering effects. As a stress reducer, CBD seems to function by supporting the body’s response to stress, here’s how:
Current studies show that CBD can regulate stress response(2). Antidepressant-like effects of cannabidiol are linked to the possible involvement of 5-HT1A receptors(3). 5-HT 1A receptors are widely distributed in the brain, especially in structures traditionally related to stress and anxiety, such as the raphé nuclei, hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hypothalamus(4). Since CBD appears to influence regions of the brain responding to stress stimuli, the benefits are reduced anxiety and stress. More specifically, it appears to reduce defensive responses to stressful events or stimuli, which can include adverse effects such as raised heart rate, blood pressure, and anxiety.
Stress is also known to change the shape of the human brain by shrinking small amounts which can cause permanent damage over long periods of stress. Studies have shown that CBD can repair and even regenerate portions that have been damaged by stress and help you handle stressful situations with ease. CBD has the amazing ability to bind to the receptors in our brain to allow serotonin to flow freely. Serotonin may be known to make people feel happy, but it also helps regulate moods, sleeping, hunger, and depression. By helping your serotonin regulate itself, CBD can fight against stress that affects us otherwise. If it’s not possible to remove the stressors in your life, CBD can help decrease your body’s panic reaction so that you can solve the problem over time.
